I love almonds, in nut form they're a great snack, as a butter it's the only food I spread on toast, and as a dessert they're great dipped in chocolate.
I have only ever enjoyed almonds covered in milk chocolate from a packet, so the idea of a dark chocolate bar containing crushed almonds sounded exciting, when I spotted Vivani Dark Chocolate with Almonds (£2.00) in WholeFoods.
The bar is 200g of pure luxury; Vivani is a premium chocolate company, who only produce organic chocolate. They describe the bar as "A chocolate treat for all dark chocolate lovers: freshly roasted almonds in a smooth and delicate dark chocolate – a unique and crunchy taste sensation."
I agree to a degree, I wouldn't say it's much of taste 'sensation', but it is good. The difference between raw almonds dipped in chocolate, and roast almonds baked into a chocolate bar is astonishing. The depth of flavour is incredible with roasted almonds, and when they're coupled with dark chocolate of the quality, which Vivani produce, it is a very good thing indeed.
There is a significant difference in taste with organic and non-organic chocolate. This may sound silly, but organic chocolate tastes cleaner, if you get my meaning, not lighter, but as though it has a more 'real', naturally clean quality.
Although advertised as a dark chocolate with almonds, only 20% of the whole bar is made up of almonds. I initially thought that was quite a low figure, but when you bite into the square, it becomes clear the almonds are crushed to a fineness so they are distributed evenly across the bar. The remaining ingredients include cocoa mass, raw cane sugar*, cocoa butter and butterfat. With only six ingredients responsible for making up a bar of this quality it's clear to skill is in the technique because this bar tastes like a fine bar of chocolate I would happily enjoy every day.
It isn't too sweet, which makes it perfect to eat after a meal, or, if you're like me, as a quick breakfast when you're dashing out of the house for work - the high cocoa content is full of antioxidants, and the almonds provide both energy and protein. Although I would recommend eating a 'proper' breakfast, this more than did the job.
